Now, pay attention 007: First look at James Bond’s new Q!

The latest in the James Bond series has been shrouded in mystery since the moment in entered its difficult production. One of the most debated aspects being the casting of 32 year old Ben Whishaw. Well today we can all rest easy as the producers of the mega franchise, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, confirmed that Whishaw will be taking on the role of Bond’s much tormented gadget dealer, Q.

The announcement of who Whishaw is playing may have been rather redundant as many fans pegged him to be stepping into the quartermaster role, ever since the announcement he would be joining the latest James Bond adventure, Skyfall which is the 23rd in the official line of EON Films.

Speaking to 007.com of the announcement the series producers said, “It’s a real thrill to confirm the return of Q in Skyfall, played by the enormously talented, Ben Whishaw. We are delighted to have this beloved character back in the series.”

When EON decided to reboot the Bond series in 2006 with Casino Royale many welcomed the changes, with a grittier, more realistic Bond that was more in line with the character found in Ian Fleming’s novels. However, some aspects of this real world take on the super spy weren’t welcomed so well with many fans missing Q and his many elaborate gadgets.

Whishaw is the fourth actor to play the role of Q in the official Bond film series with Desmond Llewelyn holding onto the role the longest, appearing in 17 films from 1963-1999.

Will bringing Q back be a good call in the down to earth Bond of today? Will we see more and more elaborate gadgets? What’s your favourite Q gadget, the invisible car, the laser wristwatch? Let us know in the comments bellow.

i’m actually delighted they brought back Q, though having him a bit younger might be a tad distracting, still really looking forward to the new bond movie XD

I actually like the fact that Q’s going to be younger, it adds a different dynamic to the whole thing and I don’t think it’ll be distracting at all. I’m hugely hyped for this movie myself, I love Craig’s old school approach to Bond and I think the trailer looks gorgeous. I fear that bringing Q back will bring the series back to where it was when Brosnan left, which was a low point of the series if you ask me.

well does he need gadgets to open door or fire lasers im sure in this day and age theirs an app on the iphone for that now. in terms of having a q i like the idea but i may be looking at this news with rose tinted glasses. i mean i grew up with bond films and that being said times have changed the idea of a car that could go underwater well these days that not too far fetched anymore so they will have to put a modern twist on it. and depending on how they make the twist it could make or break the film. great article

That’s a really good point. Surely Bond’s Q these days is his smartphone, maybe Q will design apps? In terms of cars going underwater and such, I don’t think we’ll see that in Bond now with the way films are striving for realism and grit I just don’t see Bond pressing a button on his Lotus and it turning into a submarine. I think that Bond now needs to be dark and gritty to a degree to combat the Bourne series, however he also needs his sense of humour that’s what Bond is and it’s very difficult to balance those two elements. I do think a modern take on Q and his gadgets could make or break the film as it could feel out of place with the dark and gritty Bond of today. And with the rumours of Chris Nolan taking a stab at 007 I don’t think we’ll be getting a light hearted Roger Moore-esque Bond for a long, long time. And thanks!
